I know, I know. Another newsletter from a self-taught perfumer who broke his way into a traditionally clandestine industry. More drivel about how perfumes are like wearable paintings you can enter in your nose. How sick are we of deep diving inside perfume bottlers to see how they tick…with an actual perfumer? I mean there are like 500 perfumers in the entire world - do we need another one to blab on about the merits of Bulgarian Rose Otto!?
…Alas I think it’s time for me to chat fumes the way I see them. I will take you inside my thinking behind perfumes I’ve made & ones I want to make. I will discuss ingredients, common & rare. We all know Vetyver is cool. But do we know why boring old lavender continues to enchant? What about the beauty of molecules – civettone, boisiris, ambroxan, hexyl tiglate? How studying whale vomit changed the way we smell in the modern world? As a rough-around-the-edges person, I won’t bore you with too much technical stuff. After all, I learned to make perfume through making my own observations & experiments – Gonzo Perfume for real!
Join me as I discuss aromas I have experienced in my travels – highland shrubs, tropical flowers, the aroma of a church in Norway. I’ll discuss how I translate music, food, literature, & more into aromas. So subscribe if that sounds tasty to you. Welcome if you already have!
Hello, I’m french, living in the south of France. I discovered your brand/work/art last summer in SF with DEBASER in Ministry of Scent (such a great place). I was instantly in love. Of course I tried it because of the name (Doolittle is one of my beloved album of my youth) (I am getting old), but I bought it because of the smell, this crazy green fig. Now, I follow everything you do, on Instagram and Spotify (love your playlists). I feel I understand the spirit of your brand, the freedom in it, the way you do, playfull and inspired.
But in France, it’s hard to get your perfumes, especially when they are new and if you don’t live in Paris. I would love to smell Big Sur Eucalyptus for exemple (been of this coast last summer too), but how can I do ? The french shop Nose or Liquides Imaginaires don’t have it… are you going to put it on french market soon ?
Perfumes have always been my « péché mignon », I can really be obsessed with them. Now I see my DEBASER being smaller and smaller… almost gone… help me choose a new adventure !
I’m glad to be able to share my thoughts here even if they are not really relevant (sorry), and if my english is not completely correct (sorry again).
Anyway lot of praises from France !
I might call Notorious Oud my signature scent - a masterpiece for sure. Nice to see you here!
